Default 100% CPU while typing text? - 11-02-2005 , 08:36 PM

DWMX '04, HP 1.7Ghz Centrino mobile workstation, XP Pro, 2Gb Ram,

I have noticed lately that whenever I am typing text into the either the code or design window dw uses 100% of my cpu. I don't know if this happened
on my previous computer because its fan ran constantly so I never had any audible cues that the cpu was working hard. Has anyone else experienced this?

Something similar happened to me on my Dell a while ago. I did two things that
really helped. First, I cleared all the crap off my harddrive. Apps I no
longer use, e-mail I don't need to keep around, any garbage I could find in
Windows Explorer. Second, I defraged my hard drive, but I didn't use the
utility Windows ships with. I bought one called Diskeeper. Easy to use,
incredibly fast, and worth the $50 I paid for the professional edition.

Hope this help.
John

I do have quite a few apps installed but I defrag my HD regularly and do lots of
maintenance to keep it moving. I have had it for about 4 months and been very
careful in its upkeep. I could probably ditch a few things though.

Any other ideas anybody?

I've noticed that DW MX 2004 uses up about 50% of my CPU while I'm
typing on my 3 Ghz PC - seems excessively high, but I'm assuming it's
because it is constantly reflowing everything after every character
typed (older versions used to wait to reflow, which saved CPU use but
make it hard to see what you were typing!)

Don't think it's a bug, just a consequence of the program's design.

As far as I know, such behavior has always been tracked to some other app
running in the background....

What is your Antivirus and is it doing realtime protection?

I am running Norton IS 2005 and AV with real time protection. I am also running MS anti-spyware and Spybot S&D resident. I disabled all of them and it
didn't seem to make a difference.

I will keep hunting around. If anyone else has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Norton is tricky to disable. Try again, and at the least, please exclude
the Macromedia Program files folder from your realtime scan....

I excluded the entire DW program folder as well as the folder in which the
working file resides. Didn't help. I am going to do some investigation into
shutting down as many background processes as possible. See if I can't track
down which one is causing the problem.

p.s. How do you get anything done Murray? You spend so much time here helping
people, I can't figure out how you stay focused on your work.

If you're curious, you might want to Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then minimize the
Windows Task Manager - it puts a CPU monitor in the system tray, so you
can see the CPU usage "live" while you type in DreamWeaver - I get a
steady 50% CPU usage while typing in DW 2004.

Not that that's a problem, btw. ;-)
