Is gmail talk/meebo doing something other than polling?

I had a look at Interaction JS source code
(http://www.interactionchat.com/). They use polling (each 2 sec.). I
wonder what servers they use to handle such load...

Another in-browser chat does similar polling

They must be doing a lot of caching on the server side to keep it cool.
