AJAX and JSP

When you are developing JSPs and you need to use Ajax to do processing
on the server side, what do you use, another JSP?

I have not (yet) done anything AJAX, but I might use plain old servlet.
AJAX server side does not do anything visual, so a JSP does not seem right.
