Default Redirect to HTTPS for directory - 06-24-2004 , 09:31 AM

Hi,

I'm running Apache 2.0.40 with mod_ssl. I'd like to recursively protect a
single directory with https. SSL is already functioning. Only thing that
is tripping me up is redirecting any request from
http://www.myserver.com/protected to https://www.myserver.com/protected.
Any tips or advice?

Thanks!
Robert

Wrong group. Try alt.apache.configuration - follow-up's set.

And to think I have a page on apostrophe usage...

I meant "follow-up is set", honest.

As long as we're being picky with our punctuation, how about "follow-up

Since that comma is not logically a part of what is quoted, it should
not logically go inside the quotation marks (I have MEU2 Fowler ed.
Gowers on my side here); it went there for mechanical reasons of
hot-type technology, and now the USAns refuse to drop the silly habit.

I recall an IBM manual which directed the operator

blah blah blah and type the command "END."

which produced the easily predictable result when our operator
followed the instruction:

Unknown command "END."

since the command was /really/ meant to be "END", not "END.".

Absolutely. After due deliberation, I decided years ago that regardless of
ordinary US writing conventions, in technical documentation I produce, what
goes inside quotes has to be exactly the text being referenced, and all
collateral punctuation must go outside.

Somewhat resembles the traditional WIN/DOS procedure where software
tells us to "press any key to continue" and the user comes back to say
"there is no 'any' key on my keyboard" :-)

Where it belongs on your side of the Atlantic, maybe. Over here we put
it where it makes sense, not automatically as part of the quotation.

Look - even Mr Flavell agrees with me! Double :-p

Even if you did what they told you to do (press any key on the keyboard),
there are still some keys on the keyboard that wouldn't have the desired
effect (it's somewhat unusual that the shift, ctrl, or various other keys
count towards the "any" key situation).

Sorry Brian. Can't help you here. I'm just a stoopid American

As an aside, what really bothers me, is when people add commas, where they
don't make any sense.

The comma goes in the part of the text that it is punctuating - which is
where it makes sense.

If the text inside the quotes concludes with a comma or, if it originally
concluded with a stop or other mark that has been replaced by a comma
because the quote has been subsumed into a sentence such that the quote is
not at the end of the sentence in which it appears, the comma is part of the
quote and is, therefore, inside the quote marks.

"Frames are evil," he said.

If the quote has no associated end-punctuation, the comma is present to
denote a delimiting of the phrasing/structure of the sentence rather than
the quote and the comma is, therefore, outside the quote marks.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "evil", just bad.
