It's not coping well at all with nested tables, and is confusing the width
of the inner tables with the width of the outer tables, and rendering them
all wrong.

Can anyone recommend another authoring tool? I don't need a lot of bells
and whistles, but something that deals intelligently with tables.

Then change the default encoding in the HTML document-class preferences
from ANSI to UTF-8 and you will also be cleared from all the UTF-8
hassle like in other editors leading to one thread after another in
c.i.w.a.html :-)
