Default Posting a video on a website - 09-28-2003 , 09:50 AM

I have a video in WMV format which I want to post on a website. I have
never done this before and don't know the best way to do it. If anyone can
help, I would greatly appreciate it.

1. What is the best format(s) to post in terms of quality, accessibility,
and size?
2. Can anyone recommend a program, preferably free, to convert to these
formats?
3. Is there any way to guarantee that the video will either play, download,
or offer a choice when you click on the link?
4. Is there a good website that covers these issues?

Thanks in advance

You can't "guarantee" anything... force doesn't work on the Web.

However, you can increase the chance that a browser will do something
sensible with the content by making sure your server sends the proper
MIME type for it.

Indeed. Don't you just love it when you try to retrieve a RedHat
package (.rpm), and find that the browser tries to force-feed it to
RealPlayer? :-((

(Yup, if it's a plain link then it's easy to just hold down the
shift when clicking. But if the site has been too clever and makes
you submit a form in order to retrieve the package - what then?)
