A number of misconceptions and irritations have resulted. It is like
crashing the party in jeans without bothering to discover that it is
black tie affair. Most problems could be avoided if GoogleGroupers
would Google the term "lurk"[1]*first!*

When it was newsreader only one had to subscribe first;

You say that as though it's a hurdle that has to be gotten over. All
"subscribe" means is "select the group(s) you want to look at". It
isn't an application for membership and no test or approval is involved.

Well, actually in a way it does. It requires a little more effort and
technical know-how to setup the newsreader, locate a NG, subscribe,
download headers, peruse, and post. If it were so easy compared to GG
gadfly approach of posting|spamming random groups as we see than why do
they seem at a loss when challenged to use a real newsreader?
Because they don't know what one is? Not having had something explained
beforehand and then being confused by explanations that presuppose they
already know what the explainer is talking about and that contradict an
understanding they already thought, not unreasonably, that they had has
nothing to do with what's easy and what isn't easy.

Well said, Jonathan. You should make a web page with this content (oh
wait, you already have!).
Thank you. Er, have I?

Sure! Go to Google Groups and look up this thread... ain't that a web
page? ;-)

Er, sorry I don't have that GoogleGrouper mindset....just a minute, I
have a hammer around here somewhere.

What? You're different? Lie with dogs; wake up with fleas.

You think Google groups is bad?
Of course.

And then there's WebTV...but that's so I can reply and make use of my
special header for them (please see my headers).

Try the MSFT equivalent:

apparently they are called Microsoft discussion groups, not Usenet.
If they don't end up on Usenet, that's fine with me.

But fair! All Google Gropers get treated equally, and all WebTVers get
treated equally.

Forgive me, but I think it's a sign of emotional stupidity (lack of
empathy) to sneer at people because they don't know what you know
because they don't have the same intellectual history. Your remarks
don't appear to be directed at me personally, I suppose, but I don't
think you have the bigger picture. To misquote Twain (?) - isn't
everyone stupid on some subjects?

I have a 15 year old webpage on violin (http://beststudentviolins.com/
Home.html ) which started as a free page on GeoCities. I have
received many thousands of the same softs of questions (thus, the
FAQ), until I could scream: what is the difference between the violin
and the fiddle - or the violin and viola, how can I teach myself the
violin (you can't, BTW), where can I find the cheapest violin (why
would ANYONE want the CHEAPEST violin???), etc., etc., ad nauseam. I
used to be snotty about it, also, in a not dissimilar fashion from
remarks seen in this thread, until I realized I was acting like a
complete ass.

I've heard stories from old programmers that when AOL flooded the net
with newbies, AOL was referred to as "assholes on line." If you're a
powerful programmer, you don't need to denigrate other people to feel
powerful; you may have mastered some programming languages, but can
you play a Beethoven sonata? I think not.

Search the group archives: many repeated recommendations for the same

Almost everything out there is garbage, or at least obsolete. The
problem isn't finding tutorials, it's avoiding the bad and misleading
ones. Certainly don't expect the library to have chosen the right
handful.

* htmldog.com Only web tutorial worth reading (AFAIK)
* w3c.org Not readable, not a tutorial, but it's the "horse's
mouth" for the accurate specs.

* O'Reilly "Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML" Excellent tutorial.

* Lie & Bos' "Cascading Style Sheets" Tolerable tutorial, great
future desktop reference

And *who* are you quoting here?

Whose remarks? No one expects you to know everything. I don't and am
always learning, but here, in this very post you have proven why the
regulars show such disdain for GoogleGroups.

Aside of the zillions of times basic etiquette in NG is mentioned,
include this thread, I know I did in my post:

http://message-id.net/%3Cc13bb$47728142$40cba7a5$23892 (AT) NAXS (DOT) COM%3E

You have neither referenced nor quoted to whom you are replying to. Yes
repetition is annoying but if someone ask you "what is the difference
between the violin and the fiddle?" and you answer them and they they
reply "what is the difference between the violin and the fiddle?". Not
once be several times in the same conversation...

HTML, CSS, JavaScript can be complicated and technical, yes. I don't
think you missed the point about what we are complaining. It is not
GoogleGroupers understanding of such technical issues but really simple
things like *proper quoting*. Since you are a GoogleGrouper and
apparently cannot grasp the concept of quoting can you explain to me
why? I really don't understand. You have even been given links. Here is
another one...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...oogle+S earch
proper quoting usenet - Google Search

Now I really do not know much about violins but know the difference
between violin, viola, cello... I think the difference between the
violin and the fiddle is not in the instrument but rather how it is
played. Now if I asked you something about the violin, how you buy one
or best way to learn because my knowledge in the area is quite limited
and I even have some misconceptions about it. Since you know more, you
correct my misconceptions and advise me on how to precede (now remember
I know really nothing about violins)and I immediately pronounce that
"you are wrong and that I want to do it this way..." What would you
think? Probably "Alright moron, good luck with that" I cannot tell you
how many times we get that here. In fact I recall something about
absolute positioning and huge images with respect to your site, maybe?
