Please do, yes, I am very simple in my filtering techniques. These ways
have worked for me fine so far.
Once past the generalities, instructions on filtering rapidly diverge
into instructions for specific newsreaders. I can give some help with
Thunderbird, for example; I don't recognise your newsreader.

I decided to block those posts that contain obscure characters, such as
musical notes or card suits. I do it with one rule with repeated "If
subject contains x" or … (substitute ornate character for "x")

It gets tedious adding them, and no doubt there are sufficient such
characters to keep me in the game for a decade, but it whiles away the
time during the dark evenings. There is a small satisfaction to be
gained each time you add an extra character to such rules, and that is
helpful psychologically, if not practically.

There's a bug in the Lotus Notes that I use that renders such filters
inoperative, and I'm not 100% certain that they are working in
Thunderbird. So far, I've seen only one post containing such characters
which *looks* like it out to have been caught by my filter, but since
the character was just a large round blob, and they come in several
sizes, I can't be sure if the filter failed or not.

You could always drop in news.software.readers where filtering is one of
the big subjects. Nobody would probably mind too much that you are using
a Mac .
Nah, I am very choosy in bestowing the gift of my company. You lot have
simply got lucky! <g>

It appears to me the same URI appears in the Subject header of all
these posts. Kill on that.

Kill on "@gmail.com" ... problem solved, and many, many others.
Mike Carlton, a columnist in the Weekend Review section of the Sydney
Morning Herald might suddenly have the urge to post. He recently changed
back to a gmail address because his hotmail one was getting a "blizzard
of spam - much of it, inexplicably, in Chinese" (see last Sat edition).

I run a check on the newsgroups messages are crossposted posted to.

I had to google to find one of these messages that I think you are
referring to. The message was posted to:

sci.math, comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html, sci.logic

I have two of those groups in my list: sci.math, sic.logic

I may have other filters that may catch that post as well but it only
takes one to discard the the post in this group of filters.

I do not currently keep track of my filters as to which ones are
discarding the most post, but the cross posting was the most effective
when I was tracking them.

Don't worry about people stealing an idea. If it's original, you
will have to ram it down their throats.
