Default What CSS book is the best? - 11-18-2004 , 10:41 AM

I want to learn top-notch skills in CSS to create mind-blowing websites
without tables, 100% XHTML & CSS.
I am currently able to create average XHTML & CSS web sites, but I'm
unable to do anything without tables. I need a good book. I found on
Amazon two O'Reilly books:
- Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition by Eric A.
Meyer
- CSS Cookbook by Christopher Schmitt
I have the HTML, XHTML, and CSS Bible by Bryan Pfaffenberger (Wiley ed.)
but I'm unhappy with the weak content.
What do CSS gurus read to create 100% certified table-free web sites?
Thanks,

I like Eric Meyers books. This one is good. I also recommend his book
"Eric Meyer on CSS" which is a more practical guide with tutorials and
exercises. There is a followup book called "More Eric Meyer on CSS"
which I have not read yet.

Are you sure about XHTML? Unless you have use for X it is not good idea
at all.

So, you have learned very little on CSS.

Most recommended here and everywhere, but I have never looked it up. If
it has something about browser support things, they are out of date.

Sounds scary.

Never buy book with "bible" in title. Do buy books that are called bible
and don't have the word in title...

Specs and this newsgroup? http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/ and nowadays
http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/ also.

No CSS guru reads books about CSS to learn about CSS. And likely never
has done that. Gurus write books, they don't read them...

And, tables are of course OK for tables.

This newsgroup is an excellent place to learn techniques from top-notch
designers.
"Mind-blowing" is a relative thing. I'm not sure where you would find
sources for "how to make your site totally awesome in one week!"

That book is always close to hand at my desk. It is an excellent
discussion and reference for CSS. It does not cover the very latest in the
CSS spec but neither do current browsers.

'Definitive' and '2nd Edition' in one book title somehow make me grin.
Makes me wonder when the 3rd edition of this *definitive* guide will be
published :-D

Not saying anything about its contents, because I don't actually know the
book.

It is a good book, except for one problem: it has a tremendous number of
errors. Many errors are typos. Many appear to be copy and paste errors.
Some are just carelessness. To me it looks as if the book was written in
haste, and that the proofers did a very poor job. And, unfortunately, many
of the errors might not be obvious to a neophyte.

It would have been nice if O'Reilly would give out a free update to (a
hypothetical) Edition 2.1 to those who bought 2.0.

I almost forgot. The CSS discuss mailing list has a list of
