textarea styled as a textbox

What I would like to have is a scroll setting such that the text
in my textarea would be as if the horizontal scrollbar were
there, only the scrollbar does not show. In other words, by
doing things like pressing the right arrow or the end key, I could
get at text to the right, beyond the borders of the textarea.
There is precedent for this behaviour: the textbox.

So what I am asking is: is there a way to style a textarea to
get this textbox type of overflow behaviour?
