I'm would like to display (or not) text on a page in result to user
clicks. The general idea is that there will be a list of items,
clicking on a "+" next to an item expands (displays the layer) some
detail text beside it. Clicking again collapses it (hides layer).

I have a lot of JS, CSS formatting, and some DOM experience related to
XML, but little application of it to CSS layers. I need some samples
as well as pointers to some of the caveats of doing this. I'd like to
have compatibility for FFox 2 & 3 and IE 6 & 7.

Pointers? Samples? Comments on the general concept?
Here's a site that appears to do what you are suggesting:
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/on-143_metric_e.html
(Click on one of the "More Info" items for sticky popup
menus, or the "Show Details" link below the forecast for extended
detail)

I can't speak to the correctness (or otherwise) of the html/css/js,
but it does at least do what you described in FF 2 and 3 (at least)...
