On a Mac group recently there was a poster who plays games and uses
browser windows side by side! We were discussing a Mac FF 3.0.6 bug that
makes the scrollbars disappear when the window is less than 600px. Does
this happen on Windows or Unix?

What about *vertical* scrollbar in just under 600px wide or thereabouts?
Tested, of course, on a page where there should be one? I was not sure
if the vert should have been there and was missing in your test? The
vert is one of the main probs I think on the Mac version.

Never seen it happen under Linux.

Only when the vertical size is not sufficient to show the the up, down,
and grippy widgets.

Must be a Mac feature ;-)

BTW I had the distinct "pleasure" of using a Macbook this weekend. What
is it with the feature where if you get your cursor anywhere near the
edge of the screen, like trying to grab the scroll grippy, your app
windows scurry off screen in all directions like roaches when you flip
on the lights!

Macs have various "hot corners" that you can turn on that do things. For
example, you can set the machine to make all the directory windows
disappear to see your desktop clearly when you move mouse to an assigned
corner. Being as there are 4 corners, you can set 4 different actions.
Don't use this myself. I use the function keys to do few things. F11 is
just about the most useful management tool I have (it clears the desktop
of all apps and directory windows), press again and all come back.

I don't know about the latest OS and Macbook and edge (rather than
corner). Sounds like on a small screen real estate, best to turn off
such "features" in Sys Prefs.

One feature I like is the dock hiding option. It appears when needed and
your mouse goes to the edge it hides near.

You will get used to it Jonathan and I can see you are starting to be
hooked. And ... oh yeah... I just saw a pig fly by... <g>

Now, a question from me. On my winbox, XP Pro, why can't I properly
select the exact bit of text I want. In wordpad I try to select foo from
the context of <p>foo</foo> and no way will it just highlight foo, it
peskily highlights (and copies or removes or drags) foo</p> ? I select
by inserting between o and < and drag left till I get just past f. got
me beat. I could not see anything in "settings" relevant?

Not likely ;-) My alternate desktop is an Ubuntu system, I actually
prefer the KDE desktop...

If Microsoft get too pricey and substitutes eye-candy for functionality a Mac
is definitely *not* a step in the right direction in my opinion.

That's $$%# MS trying to second guess what you wish to select...you
didn't what to select *just* the "foo", right? Anyway, don't use Wordpad
for markup...it's just a lightweight word processor and a pretty poor
one at that! There are so many *free* better tools for the job. I
recommend Crimson Editor

http://www.crimsoneditor.com/

Syntax highlighting, macros, coding features, and free...and it will
just select the "foo"

Stoopid typo of mine:

Yes, that is just what I wanted to select.

Quote:

But lightweight is exactly what I want and it is there! I don't develop
with windows, just see IE6 and 7 and sometimes have to alter mark up and
CSS to see the effects. Works brilliantly for me except for this
particular prob. Anyway, I have no real idea if it is just my machine or
a general problem with XP and Wordpad?

(I have tons of other programs (they were on my box when I had win2000
and I have the disks - like topstyle - but I discovered I get by fine
with Wodpad for my needs. Except for this one pesky problem? (I manage
by copy pasting and then deleting unwanted bit. It does this ok))

But, no worries, I will dump and use other editors if I do not solve.
