Position Text in Pushbutton

I'd like to make neat little pushbuttons (<input type="button"
value="+">) but when I try to shrink them down to a "neat" size
(height: 1em; width: 1em the "+" disappears out of the visible area
of the button. I tried various things. Setting padding:0 seems to help
a little, but not nearly enough.

I'm testing this on the Firefox browser. I'd like it to work on all
current browsers that support CSS. What CSS should I use?
