Default What's your validator? - 08-18-2003 , 08:56 PM

I made a web page (wheee!) and decided to test it (by upload) in the W3C
Validator
http://validator.w3.org/
I had some errors, but as Bilbo said of Gandalf, "The explanation did not
explain."

In desperation I clicked randomly and ended up at the WDG Validator
http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/

Their explanation were actually helpful, and wild was my rejoicing when,
after a few
iterations, I received the message
Congratulations, no errors!

I now am in love with the WDG Validator. Would there be any downside to
swearing my
fealty to it, rather than the W3C Validator?

No, it's a very good validator, with very understandable messages, you
may fall in love again with the W3C's validator in its next release,
it's getting more understandable messages in the beta too.

Speaking of validation --

Heady with victory, I took my CSS over to
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

I was able to make +some+ sense out of its suggestions, and I now have a
style sheet that validates, too. *preen* Are there any other CSS validators
out there?

What is amazing in retrospect is that it took me so long to even think of
looking at other
HTML validators, because I'm so used to error messages that don't give
useful information
(yes, Bill Gates, I'm looking at *you*).

The WDG also has a CSS validator, but AFAIK it does not implement as
much of CSS as the W3C CSS validator.

BTW, both the W3C and the WDG HTML validators are based on nsgmls, an
SGML validation tool by James Clark. So they should both report the same
errors, while the messages may vary.

Not really, no. Both validators are CGI frontends to the nsgmls program;
save for a few backend differences and an entirely different CGI frontend
the results should be exactly the same.

You can read more about the differences at

http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/valida...fferences.html

Enjoy.
