If you get the FF browser, you can get extensions which, under Tools,

I'd like those -- do you have any idea what they're called?

Web Developer Bar extension

http://chrispederick.com/work/web-developer

It took a little doing, but I finally manged to pick it up. It has
a lot of cool features.

Unfortunately, its validator seems to require that you be on-line.
Not on my version on my Mac. 3.0.11,

I think you misunderstand, the document that is to be validated does not
need to be "online", but *you do* in order to use Web Developer's
"Validate Local ..." to validate local files.

Yes, of course! The validator is the W3 validator, all the extension
does is prepare the page for transmission or upload...

If you want standalone validators to install on your local server...

http://validator.w3.org/docs/install.html
Installation Documentation for The W3C Markup Validation Service

http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/DOWNLOAD.html
Download and Install the CSS Validator

Is there an off-line validator for dummies, for people whose eyes glaze
over when reading the jigsaw installation instructions?

Does anyone besides me use Liam Quinn's 'A Real Validator' from
http://arealvalidator.com/ ? It isn't free, but it isn't expensive
either. It does HTML but not CSS.

O yes, you have to be online, the file does not have to be online as in
online to everyone. And yes, I did not catch the alternative
interpretation!

I like the analogy of tax, the more you pay, the more money you earn...
the more mistakes, the more you get right... is it not the aim of a
lover of truth to build up more truth than falsehood? <g>

A good HTML editor can have one built in. There must be some for
Windows...

BBEdit (a Mac text editor) does not miss much. And a Mac browser called
iCab has a brilliant device, a little icon of a face and the face is
green when everything is kosher and deep scarlet when things are bad. It
even detects CSS errors. You can use it offline by simply dragging your
html file over the browser window. And, no, it's not just a face, it has
a mind too and you can bring up the faults it finds!

There's always HTML-Tidy, not a validator, a linter, but it will show
things that are off. Top-Style will throw CSS errors at you. Neither
program has to be on-line to work.

Thanks, Adrienne. I'll have a look at Top-Style. I hope your move
goes/went well.
