This latter has since been changed back to styling the numbers
according to class in the left column.

Are you there Dave Rado? Look at the table mark up and you will
see it to be much simpler than your table within table one and
spacer gif one. If you do use tables for this (and I have argued
previously why it even makes semantic sense to do so), at least
get it down to as simple as you can.
