Well, my boot drive died and with it IE6. When I got it back up I
loaded IE7, which acted like it worked but didn't. I uninstalled IE7
and tried to load IE6 which XP refused to accept.

I guess you haven't heard - multiple IE's on XP is not a problem. Google
is your friend.

Install IE7 then as many other versions as you like. You can get them at
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/standalone
Those look sweet and easy!

Unfortunately I couldn't install IE7 correctly. I'm afraid to try it
now because of my previous experience.

Thanks for the link. I've done multiple IE's in the past but it was a
trick involved, and when I went looking recently what I found required
hacks. Apparently I should have searched for "stand alone".

Way back in the beginning there was some extra file finagling of some
sort, but those were later incorporated into the downloads at evolt.org.

So just download, unzip, make some shortcuts, and away you go. You do
need IE7 installed and running first, though, I think.

And remember this, Jeff: I am very much out of my depth with anything MS
Windows but I installed the above fine on an old PC. I think you need
XP, IE7 and away you go as Bergamot says.

I have no idea why I've had such problems, it was a fairly recent
version of XP and I sucked the latest IE7 off the net. IE7 was one of
the first things reinstalled.

The box is about a 2 year old low power AMD dual core.

I'm not willing to try again until I have a backup computer running.

I'm working on my photoclubs site again. Tell me what I need to
change. Galleries are down at the moment while I rewrite.

You probably don't remember the link and I'm not sure if you are psychic.

Have no time for a comprehensive look right now but the pics look nice.

I would wrap such sentences as:

"The following photographs were taken on a vacation trip to Nova Scotia
during the summer of 2005. Yarmouth ... pleasure to digitally capture
and print. Several have been enhanced through Photoshop and image
filtration and to me have become even more special.

in a paragraph element.

Considering that I had to hit zoom in 5 times in Firefox to break the
table, I don't feel too bad.

Seriously, I'm probably going to quit being webmaster of this site
(tomorrow) and not because I'm getting flack from the club at 5x zoom in.

I didn't hit zoom once; that is my default size. Any smaller and I
can't read it.

FWIW, I also use a large default text size and usually see the same
issues as you do, but not this time. I, too, had to hit zoom a few times
before the overlap happened.
