here are final versions:

Add this CSS:

#wrapper
{
position: relative;
z-index: 0;
}
.background
{
position: absolute;
top: 0;
bottom: 0;
z-index: -1;
}
#leftbar_bg { background: #FFFF00; left: 0; width: 250px; }
#content_bg { background: #00CC00; left: 250px; width: 460px; }
#right_bg { background: #CC33CC; right: 0; width: 250px }

It never occurred to me that you could position background colors like
background images. It's obvious now and quick imaginative thinking on
Ben's part.

IIRC that's roughly how the one I keep posting this link to works:

http://www.nrkn.com/3ColEqualPositioned/
I was just looking at that (it was open), and it just struck me as being
the same idea. It certainly is the easiest. Then I came back to see what
was new in this thread.

Dorayme, didn't you have at one time a compendium of group 3 column
designs? There is one more is missing, I think.
It has never been up to a thorough professional quality nor to any level
of comedy worth achieving. Between work and usenet and play, when is
there time to do serious construction? Maybe around Xmas.

I have a test crew I keep on stand-by for anything I write. If they roll
about the floor in paroxysms of laughter, I don't worry about the
professional quality, this is good enough for me. But they have been
looking glum lately! <g>

It is not surprising how natural the desire for columning is. Perhaps,
the cross browser difficulties of it without tables should encourage
more of us to become less dependent on columns in the first place. You
know, "stop wanting them!". Out of adversity...

Simple pages can live without, but it is hard to do a modern high
density site with this missing.

Yes, I think you are probably right. It is the dead obvious and expected
way to transmit information. Being expected is important. Companies tend
to be conservative and the risks in their main investments are enough
for most of them.
