Default CSS layout - problems with Mozilla 1.4 and general comments - 09-11-2003 , 06:23 AM

I've been playing with a CSS based layout at
http://steve.pugh.net/vtt/

I thought this wouldn't be too tricky, but eventually had to use a
combination of position: relative and float which is a bit messy. (I
also had to do some other nasty things to work round IE's host of
bugs).

At the moment it's working perfectly in IE6, Opera 7.11 and older
Gecko based browsers.
But when it comes to Mozilla 1.4 (and hence also Netscape 7.1) the
actual text of navigation drops down to below the end of the content,
although the box containing that text still displays correctly.

XHTML and CSS pass validation.

Any ideas about what I've missed?

And in general, how does it look in other browsers. I'd especially
like to hear about Win IE5.5, Win IE5, Mac IE5, Safari and Konqueror.

cheers,
Steve

Okay, I've fixed it. I had an extraneous right hand side margin on my
content container. Now looking good in IE6, Opera 7 and Gecko
browsers.

I'm still interested in feedback from other browsers though.

MSIE 4 puts nav links 1-4 in a box at upper right, "Praesent" text
in a VERY wide box below that (forces horizontal scrolling even on
1024 pixel screen), and nav links 5-8 left justified in a box that
is itself right justified below and slightly wider than the
"Praesent" box.

Thanks.

IE4 may end up with NN4 in getting a bare bones stylesheet (I've not
yet written it). Just too much hassle.

I never saw it before you fixed it but it looks ok in Firebird 0.6.1 on
Linux.

It's messy in Konqueror 3.1.3 though. The 2nd and 3rd boxes on the right
are below the main text, and the first box seems to be tall and skinny and
hiding underneath (ie behind) the main text with none of its
content visible.

Cheers
Anton
