Default content in 3rd column starts lower. - 04-09-2005 , 07:27 PM

hi,

I've got a 3 column layout which I want to use. But when testing it
appears that the 3rd columnn text starts a little lower then the text in
the other columns. This is the case in internet explorer but not in
firefox. Any idea what might be causing this behaviour?

Thanks in advance,

Roderik

There are at least two errors to correct. One is design, the other CSS.
The design problem relates to "xtra." It should be nearly identical to
"nav" except for float:right, and placed inside of div-middle where nav
and content are.
The other is the padding-top:1.7em xtra has that nav does not, defined
in "* html #xtra."

As a troubleshooting aid put borders around the various elements. You
can see where the extra space comes from much more easily. You'll have to
adjust the widths to get the layout correct-ish. And delete div-header to
see where all the borders are.

if i remember correctly, starting your page with an xml declaration

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

throws IE into quirks mode, while FF stays in standards mode.

as a consequence padding and margins have different effects on the box
domensions.
