gulp!

Pehaps you're not quite ready for having your own server. But if you
do decide to press on, do look at the wampserver.com link I posted
several hours ago.
We were all beginners when we first started out. When I installed Apache
on my local machine for the first time, I didn't know the answer to that
question. I found out by reading the docs. Actually, I think I was clued
in when I read the configuration file.

Once again, spot on.

Thanks. I'll walk through the setup and see if there's anything I
don't understand. When the .msi file unpackages itself, will I find
a document in there telling me how to decide on the various choices
I'll be asked to make?

Once the Apache server is installed you'll find basic documents within
the server directory on your hard drive. As I recall that'll be
'C:\Program Files\Apache2'. Or something similar. There is plenty
online to instruct you in the configuration and running of Apache on
your machine.

You *will* be asked during the install if you want the server to run
as a service. That means 'Do you want your server to automatically
start when you boot up?'. That's up to you.

Also, how do I test that it's working, once the install is done? I
don't want to test it by writing a page that asks the server to send
"Hello World" when I click "Submit," because I've never done that
before either, so I have to test the two separately. You can't test
two things that you've never done at the same time, because when it
doesn't work, you don't know which stage is broken.

Read this next line:

fire your Apache up, point your browser to 127.0.0.1

How come you guys keep mentioning 127.0.0.1? Is that address special
in some way?

Local loopback IP address. if you're running a server on your local
machine, that's the IP address of your machine. That or 'localhost',
which resolves to 127.0.0.1
Thank you very much. With all your help and friendly explanations,
this seems quite do-able. I'll give it a try some time this week, maybe
around Wednesday.

Thank you. I'm planning on it. You, my friend, are a very good explainer,
which is a rare and valuable talent. You should teach at the college or
university level and make a fat paycheck.

I still haven't done that, but I figured out why I'm scared. Would you
happen to know a link to a site with the screenshots that will come up
during the installation process? I'd like to try to plan my way through
it, before I start clicking.

Also, I'm assuing that this is a one shot process, and if you don't get
it right, the install is permanently screwed up. Do you know if it's
possible to fix any mistakes during the install process by simply going
through it again, and typing in the correct values the second time, or
by uninstalling and reinstalling?

If we're still talking about installing a webserver, and from the
headers on your posts, I'm assuming that you have Windows, then
installing Apache from http://httpd.apache.org/ is one of the simplest
installations imaginable. It is also completely removable - you go into
"Add/Remove programs" in the Control Panel, and remove it.

I don't recall if the installation asks any questions, but if it does,
take the defaults.

It may not be configured the way you will need it, but take it one step
at a time. After you have installed apache, send your browser to
http://127.0.0.1 and you'll see that it worked.

I installed it, but gave it a fake domain name, because I don't have a
real one. That gave some kind of "Bad Domain Name" error message during
the install. Can I still make it work for my original purpose? I
wanted to make the ACTION="page name" command work, for a page hosted on
my machine.

Yes, it will work. Under "Start", "Programs" you should find an "Apache
HTTP Server" entry, and in there, a "Configure Apache Server" and in
there an "Edit the Apache httpd.conf configuration file".

Take care not to change anything (yet).

Look for a line starting "ScriptAlias" which should look something like
this:

ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "C:/Program Files/Apache Software
Foundation/Apache2.2/cgi-bin/"

(all on one line). Anything you reference on the ACTION= in a <FORM>
will be fetched relative to the directory named in your ScriptAlias, so
if you had ACTION=test.pl then the CGI Script that would run (in my
example above) would be:

C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/cgi-bin/test.pl

You may find an example script in this cgi-bin directory. In which case
you can test it with http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/[example.name]
