Also offered would be a text box where visitors could type,
"metropolis city plumber" and get the relevant listings.

I would also be interested in ideas about organising this with
static pages, in a directory structure. *Including directory-
building scripts - preferably free. *This could be set up for a
short time while learning the more technical search/DB details.
You could also think about to implement XML.
Something like

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<Process>
<Company>In&Out</Company>
<Adress>8 Huge Way</Adress>
<Area>Woodstock</area>
<Metropoli>Chicago</metropolis>
<Service>
<Plumper>YES</Plumper>
<Electrician>NO</Electrician>
</Service>
</Process>

You can use SAX (Simple API for XML) and AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript
and XML -> background thread at same time client client interaction)
and the Microsoft SQL Server along with XML.
But 'static' are also '.csv' file types. (comma seperated values).
Depends.
It is possible to generate your files out of simple spreadsheets (MS
Excel) or databases (MS Access).
