Why is that a problem? You asked for the select menu to be exactly 50 pixels
wide, no more or less, and that's what your browser is giving you.

It is necessary to put some scroll bar
in the drop down menu or to expand a drop down window so I can see all the
text inside without scroll bar.

Why would all the hoop-jumping be needed? If the results you asked for aren't
the results you want, simply ask the browser for different results. Stop
trying to "nail" the select list to 50 pixels wide, and the browser will
expand it as needed to fit your content.
