Default freespeech webhost - 12-06-2006 , 03:11 PM

I want to put up several websites.. Id like to be able to have freedom
to to post just about anything i want.. I live in the usa but if the
host was overseas then it should be ok right? I plan on hosting
hacking info.. drug and chemical info. maybe a few nudie pictures..
The problem I have is choosing my webhost.. I need a host that wont
cave in under pressure from religous groups, political groups, etc..
that might want to get my site shutdown.

Ive been doing some searches with google but havent found any host
that has a no-nonsense tough policy protecting free speech...

also how do people determine what webhost a site is on anyway? As far
as i know this info regarding who hosts your site does not show up on
a typical 'whois' search does it? thanks in advance for any help -JJ

What's going to make it worth while for a host to fight your cause? Money
talks and unless you're willing to pay some big bucks, it just isn't worth
it for most hosts to deal with you.

Yes, information on the host is found in the whois - if you know how to read
it.

i didnt say FREE host.. i said FREE-SPEECH webhost..

and why would a host want to fight for me and my right to free speech?

well maybe to defend the first ammendment? if thats of any importance
to you... Even if it is just 'MY' 1st ammendment thats being
violated.. if noone helps to defend 'MY' rights.. then soon it will be
'YOUR' rights that will be violated next. This is why if your free
speech rights are ever tested... (larry flint... 2livecrew..
LennyBruce... etc) you will never have trouble finding great lawyers
to defend you at their own expense and work pro-bono.. because this
inherit right is important to them and to set an example and deter
others people and groups who would try and tell us what we can and can
not say.

I didn't say free either. Most hosts don't include the cost of hiring
lawyers to fight for every idiots right to say any stupid thing they feel
like saying. Right or wrong, legal or not, free speech isn't FREE and most
hosts aren't going to cut into their bottom dollar to fight for your
cause(s).

Most hosts are in the business to make money. Mixing business and politics
or personal causes isn't entirely business savvy.

Sure it is.

Yawn.

No, actually, setting precedence and the free publicity is important to most
of them.

Its a good speech, you give, and that's all well and good...but business
isn't an idealistic bubble.

PS: Don't be so presumptuous that you know my stance on your cause. You
don't. I'm merely stating facts as they are in the real world and why you
have trouble finding a host.

The ones you got were helpful (without any scare quotes).

Here's another: try some porn hosts.

Where do you get this crazy idea you have a RIGHT to post info on
hacking, illegal drugs and pornography??

Get real. Actions have consequences.

No it wouldn't be ok if it was overseas - you would still be liable for
any offenses you committed.

There are many hosts all over the world that can be used, and a domain
with them sometimes is fairly reasonable in cost. I doubt if any host
will allow you to put up information that is illegal in their country.
Thus some research on the legality of what you want to put up in
various countries is in order if anything you put up is likely to be
illegal. You mention hacking information. For example, hacking to
overcome copy protection on commercial DVDs is illegal in many
countries, and sites that have even given away free programs for doing
this have been closed in several countries. Here the problem often
comes to you not from the host, but from a legal order to stop, appear
in court, or both. However, where not illegal, such as on certain small
island states, programs for hacking protected DVDs are available and
being sold. There seem to be hosts in the Far East that will host just
about anything, illegal or not, for a sometimes high price for things
such as extreme hardcore sex, child porn, identity theft, etc that are
very illegal in most countries.

Most hosts that cater to small business in the US do not want adult
material, spammers, etc on their servers, because these bring them more
problems that the profit they make is worth. However there are a few
hosts that will allow adult material that is not illegal. Some want to
know the nature of such material you put up to insure that they are not
likely to have a legal problem with it. I believe LunarPages.com (This
might not be the exact name) would allow certain adult material if you
provided them with a description of just what type of it you wished to
put up.

There is no absolutely free speech anywhere I know. As one US supreme
court judge said many years ago, free speech does not entitle one to
cry fire in a crowded theatre. The limits vary greatly from country to
country and even down to city by city. Even if a local law is a
violation of national free speech rights, you had best have plenty of
money, or be able to get a civil rights group interested, to pay huge
legal fees to take your case to federal courts.
