Default best statistics for screen sizes? - 06-07-2007 , 04:04 AM

Where would I find the best statistics on screen sizes?
I looked at one browser stats site, and it claimed that
the most common is XGA 1024x768
However, I doubt this. At the local computer shops,
nothing is for sale less than SXGA (1280x1024).
So there must be a lot of old computers and laptops
in use out there....

P.S. I know one should not design for large screens,
but make something flexible that copes with SVGA
to UXGA.

The 4 most common sizes for visitors to my site (in sig) are:
1, 1024x768 (3 times as many as the next most common!)
2, 800x600
3, 1152x864
4, 1280x1024
This order in popularity rarely changes

I write the site on a laptop at 800x600 (not connected to net - ever!) with
virtually everything 'centralised'. I then transfer to this PC at 1024x768
and check the pages before upload and if all looks good up it goes. I have,
on occasion, checked at 1280x1024 and all is well there too.

Don't forget it is not the resolution that the machine is capable of that is
always used, have you tried reading a web page at 1280x1024 on a 14 inch
monitor? it gets a bit difficult and not everyone uses 15, 17 or 21 inch
monitors.

People. You can't live with 'em and it's illegal to hunt them...except in
Texas.
