Default xmp alternative - 08-28-2003 , 03:34 PM

Hi,
I'm hoping someone will know if there is a replacement for the deprecated
xmp tag. I have a situation in which I use the same XML document to produce
HTML and PDF. These
are technical documents and often need to show samples of XML. Using <
and > is
unfortunately impractical in this case and would require transformation for
the PDF documents since < in a PDF document would display as &lt (not
what is intended).

Does any one have any ideas how I might solve this problem without using a
deprecated
tag?

thanks in advance,
-- dave

It was obsoleted in 1995 and later completely removed from HTML
specifications, so "deprecated" is an euphemism here.

The replacement is the same as in 1995, the <pre> element.

Wait a minute... you say you are using XML and some conversion or
transformation tools, and cannot handle a simple conversion of "<"
characters?

Why would the conversion to PDF be affected by what you do in the
conversion to HTML?

Well, unfortunately that is what is *required* both in recent versions of
HTML and in XML.
