I'm not sure I understand exactly what your problem is.

Can you explain again? Thanks.

I didn't know that it was possible at all to have a computer download a
font to use at the command of a web-page... sounds like it could be a
security issue.

I thought I'd heard something that could achieve this, though... some
tag. I'd be interested to know if it does exist...

it is via a few different methods (support varies) but its not a good
idea. one persons kewl font is another persons unreadable pile of shit.

it fits into the category of "dumb mindless gimmick" and thankfully it
hasn't become popular or even more sites would be unusable.

Font downloading is one of mankind's greatest inventions ..... along
with penicillin, jet engines, satellite technology and Big Macs.

To deny the greatness of font-downloading is like denying that Father
Christmas exists.

Yet again Bill G. has tapped into the subconscious of the Web-world and
come up with another winner ................

No. Not a security issue, as far as I know.

Yes, it's very achievable ....... at least for people using Internet
Explorer (and that's probably 80-90% of your audience).

To find out more about MS's WEFT and font-downloading technology see:

Though I believe WEFT is optional in IE -- you can choose whether or not
to install support when you first install IE.

Umm ..... not quite sure what you mean ;-)

IE support for downloadable fonts is standard .... although you do have
the ability to inhibit font-file download in the same way that you can
inhibit image download or Java applet download, etc..

'WEFT' is simply the program that generates the .eot (downloable font)
file from any font installed on the user's system (assuming that the
font gives you permission to do so).

It works quite well.

The main advantages are:

(a) You can show the Web page to others as you envisaged it, if they're
a Windows user -- this may be a good or bad thing ;-)

(b) Unlike using a graphic, headings and quotes (for example) can be
re-sized along with the rest of the text on the page.

I don't use it a lot (there's the overhead of the .eot file to consider
-- although this needn't be large if a sub-set of the font is generated
via WEFT) -- but it's useful to have around when you can find a use for
it.

When you do a custom install of IE you choose from a list of components to
install. Components such as "AOL ART Image Format Support", "Web Folders"
and "Offline Browsing Pack".

One of these components is "Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements" which
adds a number of features to Internet Explorer, including the ability to
deal with embedded fonts. If this component is not installed (such as if
you choose "Minimal Install" or do a custom install) then you don't get
embedded fonts.

Another thing that IEBE does is add better FTP support to IE.

Trust me. I've installed IE going on for 100 times.
