innerHTML causes page-shift ...

Hello there!

I hope this post will have a quick review as time is running short and i
do lack experience and understanding of javascript and DOM to think this
true thouroughly.

Here goes.

For some time now i've been looking into this document shift whenever i do
an

element.innerHTML = "a text with html tags innit like <br/>";

The page in question is using javascrip to rewrite a page with contact
information but the whole div with id=contact is moved to the right by
about 15px.

Any hints or suggestion would be most welcome.
