Variables on html page

I use html web pages to monitor some equipment status (factory) and i use
the 'refresh' to re-load the page at regular intervals.

Is there a way to periodically refresh some variables (numbers/text) on an
html page without disturbing the rest of the screen?

If you know of any sample code available, or a book on this subject, i
would appreciate if you could let me know
