dhtml menus acting up in IE

Hi,

I'm in the process of building my first dhtml-based navigation. I used
this as a model:

After doing lots of tinkering and editing, this is what I came up with:

Here is my problem: It works fine in Firefox 1.0, but only after a
reload. Before a reload, the menus pop up in the wrong places. In IE,
it does not work because the menus get hidden behind the image. Is
there any way I can bring the menus to the front? I tried making the
image the background of the td, but it still does not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm totally stuck.

if you use z-index in the menus and in the div that contains the image
that is blocking the menu you should be able to solve that problem.

set the z-index of the menus higher than the z-index of the div with
the image.
